A barrel fell off of a truck in Monterey by the intersection of Washington Street and Del Monte Avenue. It left a an unknown powder on the street. The Salinas Fire Department Haz-mat team was brought in to assess the situation and clean up the scene. The hazardous substance spill happened on Friday morning.

The powder came from a barrel off a truck, and hazardous material reponders determined it was a highly caustic substance, officials said.

It was neutralized at the site and vacuumed up, a city spokeswoman said.

The hazardous substance spill closed several roads and led to traffic tie-ups. It also led to the closure of the Monterey Sports Center until the spill was cleaned up.
