Thousands Evacuated in Apex Chemical Fire

More than 16,000 people who live in Apex, NC have been evacuated from their homes after a chemical fire caused explosions and blew poisonous gasses (including chlorine) and black smoke over much of the town. The incident occurred at an EQ Industrial Services hazardous waste plant. There have already been reports of over 100 nursing home residents and around 10 emergency responders being taken to hospitals for severe respiratory problems.

People "are putting themselves in very grave danger by being near or around this smoke. If you see smoke, get away from it." said Bruce Radford, manager of the Raleigh suburban town.

"There are pesticides, oxides, chlorine gases, there are all grades of contaminated material in this fire and in this smoke," he said.

No deaths have been reported from the fire at the plant, called Environmental Quality Industrial Services, but more than 100 people have been hospitalized.

Residents have been urged not to go outside, close all windows in their homes and to turn off their air-conditioners.
